Observation Narrative
Plot is situated in the lowest and wettest microhabitat of an extensive (105-acre) saturated flatwoods on Virginia's Eastern Shore. A meandering depression runs through the area and hydrologic regime here is probably best considered shortly seasonally flooded. Water marks on trees are about 25 cm above the lowest elevation. The forest is co-dominated by Quercus lyrata, Q. palustris, Q. phellos, and Liquidambar styraciflua. High-bush Vaccinium spp. dominate the shrub layer and a patch of Woodwardia virginia dominates the southwest portion of the plot. Herbs are otherwise sparse.
